I saw Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, Dreams, the very first time in the late 90s, and many of the segments left very strong impressions on me.
The epilogue, Village of the Watermills, was probably the one that inspired me the most, as it contributed to shape my philosophies of life and death.
But there was also the opening, Sunshine Through The Rain, which introduced me to the idea of the "Foxes' Wedding".
From the movie's wiki :
« There is an old legend in Japan that states that when the sun is shining through the rain, the kitsune (foxes) have their weddings »
I had never heard of this before, which is quite amusing as here in France, that very same phenomenon is allegedly known under the name of "Mariage du Loup", aka the "Wolf's' Wedding". Well... I didn't know that. Did you know that ? I didn't know that !
Since then, I haven't been able to witness such a sunshower without being reminded of those legends.
And each time it happens, it never fails to put a smile on my face, knowing that somewhere out there, in that very same moment, a fox and a wolf are being happy.
Tiji... now, on the other hand... does not share this sentiment...
This is another render-project that changed quite a lot mid-course. The original idea essentially focused on Kat, and was, again, meant to be more symbolic than this. I wanted Tiji resting against that tree, and Kat, silently standing behind her... He wouldn't be visible, only his hand would be. And through each panel, only his hand would depict his thoughts...
His hand, hovering behind her shoulder to reflect his desire to touch her, to reveal himself to her again - the dearest soul in his life. But his fears of seing her hurt, hurting her - torn between worlds, and also getting hurt even more, ultimately forces him to lower his hand in resignation, and walk away... It's just less painful for the wolf to love her from afar, even if he has to pay this certainty with solitude... And so he vanishes, hoping for better opportunities... hoping to witness a sign from her instead... hoping for things that might never happen outside of the stories he tells himself...
And in a final panel, she'd briefly turn her head, as if she'd felt a ghost passing by - something she'd be waiting for all her life... and tears filling her eyes as there'd be no one...
But the more I worked on the scene, the more I removed Kat... til there was only one brief iterance of him left. And even know I'm tempted to remove him entirely.
So I'm kinda back at the beginning, with an original idea to do... and I'm also very, VERY tempted to make an animation of this final scene. It shouldn't be too complicated to animate that rain. So maybe I'll do that next ?
